Solutions for Magnetic Flow Meters
Eliminate Mag Meter Electrode Fouling. Restore Measurement Accuracy.
e9 Treatments’ nanoscale surface treatment prevents calcium carbonate, paraffin, and scale from coating mag meter electrodes — keeping your measurements accurate and your maintenance costs down.
The Challenge: Electrode Fouling Destroys Mag Meter Accuracy
Magnetic flow meters rely on electrodes to detect the voltage induced by conductive fluid passing through a magnetic field. When those electrodes become coated with fouling deposits, the meter can no longer accurately receive the signal — leading to measurement drift, large variance swings, and ultimately complete measurement failure.
Produced Water Fouling
Black calcium carbonate, iron sulfide, and mineral scale precipitate from produced water and coat electrode surfaces. This is one of the most common and aggressive fouling challenges for mag meters in upstream and midstream operations.
Measurement Variance
Once electrodes are fouled, the voltage signal becomes unreliable. Operators see large swings in measured flow — creating line imbalances, inaccurate custody transfer numbers, and compliance risks.
Frequent Pull-and-Clean Cycles
The standard approach is to pull the meter from the line, manually clean the electrodes, and reinstall. Each cycle means downtime, labor costs, safety exposure, and lost production — often repeated monthly or more frequently.
Diagnostic Detection ≠ Prevention
Modern mag meters can detect fouling via built-in diagnostics — but they can’t prevent it. Knowing your electrodes are fouled doesn’t solve the problem. You still need to pull and clean the meter, or accept degraded accuracy.
The Solution: e9’s Treatment Solution for Magnetic Flow Meters
e9 offers a Treatment Solution that, when applied to Magnetic Flow Meter electrodes, changes the behavior of the metal surface — making it unfavorable for paraffin and other environmental contaminants to adhere.
The treatment does not change the electrode’s electrical conductivity, the meter’s calibration, or its measurement specifications. The electrodes continue to function exactly as designed — but contaminants can no longer stick to them.
Treatment Characteristics
Does not alter electrode conductivity or meter calibration
Oleophobic and hydrophobic — repels water, oil, paraffin, scale, and organic contaminants
Temperature resistant for upstream and midstream operating environments
Will not void device warranty — validated by many OEMs
Chemically bonds to the electrode at the molecular level, not a coating that sits on top that chips or flakes off.
Mag Meter Applications We Treat
e9 surface treatment is effective across all major magnetic flow meter applications in the oil & gas industry:
Produced Water Measurement
Prevent calcium carbonate, scale, and mineral fouling on electrodes in SWD and produced water systems
Custody Transfer
Maintain measurement accuracy for allocation and custody transfer of water volumes
Saltwater Disposal
Protect electrodes from aggressive fouling in high-salinity SWD operations
Water Injection
Keep injection metering accurate by preventing mineral deposits on electrode surfaces
Pipeline Monitoring
Ensure reliable flow data for leak detection and line balance calculations
Separator Metering
Maintain accuracy on separator outlet mag meters exposed to oil/water emulsions
Case Study: Large-Scale Water Producer Solves Variance Issues
A premier, large-scale water producer operates an extensive water management system that includes nearly 200 miles of pipeline and 12 saltwater disposal facilities. The company experienced unprecedented fouling of black calcium carbonate on one of their magnetic flow meters, causing large swings in variances in the largest section of their pipeline.
After treating the mag meter with e9, the electrode fouling was eliminated and measurement confidence was restored. The operator reported stable, accurate readings with no recurrence of the variance issues that had plagued the system. By keeping contaminates from bonding to the electrodes the meter was able to accurately measure every important barrel of produced water flowing through it. This increased daily barrel counts and boosted monthly revenue.
Prior to treatment calcium carbonate fouling would cause variance issues multiple times per week. After treatment, fouling was nearly eliminated.
After treatment, e9 eliminated large variance swings in pipeline’s largest section
Flow and Barrels Per Day (BBL/D) by reducing the volatility of measurement and keeping the meter reading accurately.
“e9 Treatments eliminated the fouling our Magnetic Flow Meter was experiencing and gave us confidence in the measurement accuracy of our meter.”
“We have used e9’s Treatment for a range of our magnetic flow meters operating in US shale oil applications, in wells known for paraffin wax deposition conditions. The meter has powerful tools for detecting and also for correcting for wax deposits, and through the use of these tools we have observed that the electrodes on e9 treated meters remain essentially free from wax.”
